Own Your Numbers
You can tell me last month's revenue. You probably can't tell me what you actually kept.
The numbers that tell you what to do next — pricing, cash flow, margin, and what makes a practice sellable.
Most owners track one number. Revenue. It is the number the software puts on the dashboard, and it is the number that tells you the least.
Revenue does not tell you whether a treatment room pays for itself. It does not tell you what a provider contributes after payroll. It does not tell you whether the month that felt busy was the month that made money — and those are frequently different months.
What it costs to run blind
You discount because you don’t know your floor. You add a service because a rep was persuasive, not because the maths worked. You hire when you feel busy rather than when the ratio says you can carry it. And at some point you consider selling and discover that the numbers which make a practice sellable are the same numbers you have never been shown.
Discounting is the one that compounds fastest. Drop your price to fill a slow week and you have not filled a slow week — you have taught your market to wait for the next one. Pricing control is difficult to take back once you have handed it over.
What actually changes
You stop looking at revenue and start looking at five numbers that move it. Revenue per hour. Break-even. Payroll ratio. Average ticket. Rebooking rate.
Five numbers, one page, reviewed every Monday. Not because dashboards are satisfying, but because a decision made against a number is a different kind of decision than one made against a feeling.
Then the work gets sequenced. Pricing before promotion. Margin before volume. The order matters more than the effort, and getting the order wrong is why most owners work harder each year for the same result.
